Welcome to Library 100: Introduction to Library Resources. This course is designed to introduce you to the wealth of information resources available in print and on the Web to meet your research needs.

What impact has the Information Revolution had on you? It has had a profound impact on all aspects of society, affecting how we live, work, and learn.

Are you a part of the revolution? Of course you are! There is no escaping it. However, as participants in the information revolution, we may not be prepared to fully utilize existing or newly emerging technologies to our advantage.

The process of becoming an informed participant in the information revolution is called information competency. Information competency is defined as the “ability to find, evaluate, use, and communicate information in all its various formats”. That’s what this course is all about.

The concept of information competency is also referred to as information literacy. More information on the concept of information competency/information literacy can be found at the following web sites:

The goal of Library 100 is to empower you, the learner, to locate, access, and retrieve relevant information; develop the necessary skills to critically evaluate that information; and to apply the information appropriately to the development of research projects. You will learn the range of available resources used for research; their potential and limitations; techniques for searching online library catalogs and selected Internet-based resources; strategies for developing the research paper; and the Modern Language Association style for formatting bibliographies and lists of works cited.

How Does it Work?

Library 100 is an open-entry/open-exit, self-paced course that emphasizes the use of library methods and materials which will enable students to locate information for course-related study and research. This course is offered on a pass/no pass basis; no letter grades will be given. 

Once you are enrolled in LIBR100 you will be required to attend an orientation to the course. Most of your work for this course requires that you visit a library to locate and use specific print reference resources. A portion of your work will take place via the Internet and World Wide Web. All assignment worksheets, quizzes, and the final project must be turned in at the Library Circulation Desk. All course materials will be available for you to download from the TalonNet server. Course materials include the lesson readings, lab worksheet assignments, quizzes, and supplemental information. You will receive further instructions at the time of your orientation.

Getting Started

If you're already enrolled then here's how to get started:

• Come to the Library Reference Desk to sign-up for an orientation. There will be various days and times available.
• Access the course materials by logging into TalonNet. Even before the orientation you can access all course materials including the syllabus via the TalonNet Class
• Important information concerning the course will be posted as announcements at the TalonNet site and sent to all students as an email message. For this reason it is extremely important to have your current email account information listed with the College.
• If you don’t have an email account, visit the Computer Assisted Instruction Lab for information on creating an account. Information on updating your existing email account or adding your newly created account can be found at the MyCerritos site after you login.

There are various resources available to you as a Cerritos College Student. These resources will help you accomplish your goals – academic, career, and personal. Links to a few of those resources are listed below:

• Student Success Centers   Located in the west wing of the Wilford Michael Library and Learning Resource Center. The Student Success Centersare part of a campus support system designed to provide services and information to students who want to acquire, improve, review, or maintain personal learning skills. The Centers offers regularly scheduled workshops that can help students accomplish their goals.

• Library Computer Labs - The main library computer lab offers students, faculty and staff access to 140 computers. Computers provide access to the Internet, E-mail, and instructional software contributed by instructors from various departments. Computers are available on a first come, first served basis.
