What You Need to Know

Understanding Your Assignment

Before you begin looking for information you should make sure you understand your assignment. Some good questions are:

  • How many pages?
  • How many sources?
  • What kinds of sources?
    • Books
    • Articles
    • Websites
  • What format?

Your professor is your best resource to answer these questions.

English 100 Final Essay- Analyzing Enrique's Journey

Your Assignment

In a complete academic essay, select one of the following prompts and craft a thoughtful response:

1. How have the concept of the American Dream and the economic and emotional reasons for immigration affected Enrique and his family? How do these ideas contribute to the choices made by the family members? Discuss your thoughts clearly and thoroughly.

2. How are the lives in the United States of Enrique and his mother shaped by the way average Americans view them? Should immigrants who come to the US illegally participate in the nation’s debate regarding their status? Discuss your answer thoughtfully.

You will be writing only about the novel, not about your personal experiences or observations, for this essay. You also must use at least two outside sources to help you analyze the issues being exposed. Be sure to pull in several examples from the novel to illustrate your point.

The final draft should have all of the parts of an academic essay: an introduction paragraph with a thesis, several focused body paragraphs with clear topic sentences, and a conclusion paragraph. It should be at least five pages long.
