Celebrating African American Music Appreciation Month

The celebration of African American Music Appreciation Month began as Black Music Month and is traditionally observed in the month of June. The designation of June as Black Music Month was established in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter at the urging of Kenny Gamble, songwriter and record producer. The celebration serves to recognize the contributions made by African Americans to all facets of American music. Learn more about these contributions by using the resources presented in this guide.
