            English 100 - Assignment

In this final unit of our course we have studied the Immigration Crisis.

In Luis Alberto Urrea's The Devil's Highway we read about how the struggles of those who want to come here to live the American dream can end in tragic results and why they would want to come here.

We have also studied the challenges being faced by undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. under the past and current U.S. administrations, and the role of U.S. foreign policy in creating the conditions in the home countries where many of these immigrants came from.

We have also studied the history of racism and xenophobia in creating what Holtzman and Sharpe argue is, ”our history, [where] there have been an untold number of assaults on the humanness of people of color in the interest of white hegemony”(638).

Finally, we have heard from our peers concerning their own experiences with immigrant groups.

Take all of the things you have learned in this chapter into consideration to answer the following prompt:

Research the current U.S. system for immigration including:

            • the U.S. government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE),
            • the border patrol,
            • the role of the media in reporting on immigration,
            • our politicians in discussing and creating US immigration policy,
            • our past history as a “nation of immigrants”,
            • and lastly the struggles of undocumented immigrants living in the US …

And make an argument for or against whether the risk the Yuma 14 (including their coyote) took in crossing the desert was worth the benefits of living in the US, had they survived their journey.
