What You Need to Know

Understanding Your Assignment

Before you begin looking for information you should make sure you understand your assignment. Some good questions are:

  • How many pages?
  • How many sources?
  • What kinds of sources?
    • Books
    • Articles
    • Websites
  • What format?

Your professor is your best resource to answer these questions.

Proposal

The proposal will be a 250-minimum and 300-word maximum MLA document that elaborates an idea of what you are proposing your paper will discuss. It will identify the text, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the idea you are looking to explore, and a working thesis. You must have these three elements in your proposal.

You can expand any idea including ideas discussed in the course either on a post or class discussion, but your proposal must be accepted prior to writing your essay.

Think of your proposal as a very rough draft of an introduction paragraph.  Your proposal will guide your essay. What key information do you need to tell the audience about your essay? Keep in mind that during the process, there can and will be changes.   The proposal is a starting point.  As you research, select your articles and think about your paper, you might uncover something you did not think of earlier.  The proposal is not binding. It is where you are starting your research project.

Essay 3: Frankenstein

This essay is a research essay that will be a 2000-minimum MLA formatted essay with a works cited page that discusses a theme that you have explored from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. You will submit a proposal from the list of ideas generated on discussion posts, conversations during course time, and your own curiosity.  Expanding upon the working thesis from your proposal, you will complete academic research to support your academic theory.

A strong essay included the following:

  • Strong original revised thesis statement
  • Analyzed passages from the text that support your thesis
  • Academic support for your thesis using both in text quotations and summary
  • 4 sources from the Cerritos College Library Data Bases
  • Clearly defined argument supported throughout the essay
  • MLA formatting including a works cited page
  • A minimum of 2,000 words

You can expand any idea including ideas discussed in the course either on a post or class discussion, but your proposal must be accepted prior to submitting your essay.

What is Literary Criticism?

Literary Criticism is discussion, analysis or appraisal of a literary work-whether a novel, poem, play, short story or essay.

As a literary critic, you will read and study a piece of literature and attempt to:

  • describe
  • analyze
  • justify
  • interpret
  • evaluate

The guide will help you find biographical and critical information about authors and their works.
