Ecce Homo

Ecce Homo

In their day Romanesque and Gothic churches and cathedrals were ablaze with color, closer to the scintillation of Byzantine churches and Moslem temples than to the piously whitewashed northern church interiors we know today. The statuary was painted in gaudy and lifelike color, and was carried in processions down aisles and out into the streets, draped in finery and flickering in the light of candles. This film shows rare statues which have retained their original colors, and restores to them something of their processional drama and mystery through the control of camera-angle and cinematic technique.

Chartres: The Sculpture

Experience a virtual tour of Notre Dame de Chartres with a closer look at the cathedral's three porches, whose sculpted portals contain the largest collection of statuary of any Gothic cathedral. With their precise details, hidden narratives, and coordinating themes, these sculptures teach, inspire, and even evoke fear.

Gothic Churches in Italy

While the term Gothic is rarely used in an Italian context, Professor Cook pinpoints both traditional and unique Gothic elements present in the cathedrals of Siena and Orvieto, as well as in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. He also guides you through other buildings, including the most Gothic cathedral in Italy, Milan Cathedral.
