Kanopy Video: Stolen Education

Stolen Education: The Legacy of Hispanic Racism in Schools

Stolen Education documents the untold story of Mexican-American school children who challenged discrimination in Texas schools in the 1950's and changed the face of education in the Southwest. Degraded for speaking Spanish and dissuaded from achieving academically, Mexican American students were relegated to a "beginner," "low," and then "high" first grade - a practice that was not uncommon across the Southwest. School officials argued in the case that this practice was necessary because the "retardation of Latin children" would adversely impact the education of White children.

Kanopy Video - The Road To Brown

The Road To Brown

THE ROAD TO BROWN tells the story of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling as the culmination of a brilliant legal assault on segregation that launched the Civil Rights movement.

It is also a moving and long overdue tribute to a visionary but little known black lawyer, Charles Hamilton Houston, "the man who killed Jim Crow." THE ROAD TO BROWN plunges us into the nightmare world of Jim Crow that robbed former slaves of the rights granted by the 14th and 15th Amendments.

Board of Education Supreme Court decision to desegregate America's public schools completed the final leg of an heroic journey to end legal segregation. For 20 years, during wartime and the Depression, Marshall had traveled hundreds of thousands of miles through the Jim Crow South of the United States, fighting segregation case by case, establishing precedent after precedent, all leading up to one of the most important legal decisions in American history.

Kanopy Video: Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary

Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary: The Denial of Education and Health Care to Undocumented Immigrants

Fear and Learning is progressively unique in both form and content. And it continues to resonate during our current educational era in which teachers have little or no voice in local and federal policy that governs their roles and responsibilities. Simon offers a distinctive teacher perspective--one informed by her own experiences and her love and respect for students. She goes a step further by including student voices and perspectives, reminding the audience that, despite popular belief, even elementary school students understand and experience the politics of difference. In fact, as this film shows, students often offer deeper and more critical insights than adults.
