Registering to Vote in California

Online registration

To use the online voter registration system. you must have a current and valid driver’s license or non-driver photo identification card issued by the CA Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or you will be asked to provide the last four digits of your social security number.

Registering by Mail

You can register to vote using a paper form you can find at most public libraries or post offices.  Simply mail the form back to your county election office.

Deadline

  • Voter registration deadlines are determined by the date of the election.  The deadline to register to vote is 15 days before the date of the election.
  • The last day to register to vote for the November 5, 2024 General Election is October 21, 2024.
  • Voters who miss the deadline may cast a provisional ballot on Election Day.

Updating your registration      

If you have moved, changed your name, or changed your political party, you can update your registration by re-registering to vote.  If it's past the voter registration deadline, you can go to the polls near your new address and cast a provisional ballot.

Cancelling registration

County elections offices maintain the voter rolls. To cancel your registration, complete a  California Voter Registration Cancellation Request Form (PDF) and submits it to their county elections office.
