ART108/HUM108 Black Images in Popular Culture will explore the ways in which blacks have been depicted in society. It will trace, thematically and chronologically, the development of stereotypes and images that have been created in Western culture, most specifically in the Untied States of America. The various means artists have used to counter those stereotypes by using techniques of resistance and counter narratives will be examined.
Art/Hum 108 aids students in developing an understanding of the historical and current impact that popular culture has on the perception and construction of images of the Black community. Through analysis of cultural and artistic texts; and the reading of philosophy and cultural theory students will learn to take a critical and analytical approach to popular culture and its impact on American culture and its attitudes. Students will learn to develop ideas and articulate them in oral and written form through written assignments, oral presentations, creative projects, and class discussions.
