Pharmacy: Pharm 63 Assignment and Tools

Researching New Drugs

In this assignment, you'll be researching a new drug that you'll find using the Pharmacist's Letter.

Once you've identified your drug, use the resources below to find a peer-reviewed or scholarly primary research article on that drug.

Looking for primary research articles

After you've identified the drug you will research, you'll need to search a number of databases to find research articles on that drug. These drugs are new and it takes a while for scholarly research to be published, so you'll have to be diligent.

First, construct your search.  For example, the brand name of the drug I want to research is Nesina but the generic name is algoliptin.

My search will look like this:   Nesina OR algoliptin.  The OR tells the database to retrieve articles that use either name for the drug.

Next, go through each of the databases in the box below, using the search you've constructed.  Be sure to limit your results to full-text and to scholarly/peer-reviewed articles.

I recommend starting with PubMed and Science Direct, then using the EBSCO databases if necessary.  If you still can't find anything, Google Scholar may be helpful.

Useful Databases for Pharmacy Research

Use the following databases to find articles that are most relevant to your topic. They are in order of those that are usually most useful for pharamacy research.  See the Database Page for a complete description of the Cerritos College Library online resources.

Remember:

  • Always search databases using only the keywords that best describe your topic
  • Keywords can be combined into a search string with the operators "and", "or", "not"
