What is Problem-Solution?

A problem-solution essay starts by identifying a problem (or problems) and then proposes one or more solutions.

The basic problem solution essay outline deals with the following:

  • Problem - begin by describing the problem and the causes of the problem in the introduction
  • Solution - propose a solution and offer steps for implementation
  • Evaluation - evaluate the proposed solution by comparing it with other probable solutions

How is it used in college?

Problem-solution essays are assigned frequently in colleges and universities to measure each student's ability to identify and then to solve problems. Your Instructor might ask you to:

  • Write an essay identifying and analyzing a social problem
  • Write an essay identifying your experience with a problem and how you solved it

In general, problem-solution essays ask that you use your critical thinking skills to form connections and critically analyse situations.
